Hartington bowlers advance to State

NORFOLK — The Hartington Tro/Cat high school lady bowlers made it to State for the second year in a row

Competition was stiff at Kings Lane in Norfolk Saturday, against five C-2 District teams, with the top four spots qualifying for State.

The format was “total pin” count of four individual games, plus five Baker format games.

The lady bowlers squeaked out a fourth place finish, narrowly beating Wisner-Pilger by 39 pins.  The team was sitting in fifth place , down 111 pins, after the individual games but came back in the Baker’s format to secure the fourth place finish.  The Baker games have always been their strong point.

Team bowlers were led by three senior return letterman with high games: Allison Loecker and Maggie Wiebelhaus, 133,142; and Hannah Rembert, 145,134, plus picking up the 4-7-10 split.

Remaining team members were Laura Steffen, 122; Randi Wildi, Clarissa Paltz, Sadie Uhing.

In rankings of averages out of 35 bowlers in C-2 District, Remember finished ninth, 133.1; Loecker, 15th, 122.9; Laura, 17th,  122.1; Maggie, 19th,  121.6; Sadie, 27th, 106.4; and Clarissa, 29th, 103.8.

The ladies finished with a four win/four loss season in C-2 District.

State bowling will be at Sun Valley Lanes Feb. 11, at 1:30 p.m. The ladies will be bowling against Class C schools,  Adams Central, Burwell/Ord, St. Paul, Kearney Catholic, North Bend, Boone Central and Norfolk Catholic.

The Hartington-Newcastle/Cedar Catholic boys bowling team used the same format in District competition, with different results. There were six C-2 teams bowling for the four spots for State.

The men’s team was in fifth place after the four Individual games, 154 pins short of that fourth place needed to qualify for State.

After faltering in the five Baker games, they dropped to sixth place. The team is young and will all be back for next season.

The team bowlers were:  Derek Heimes, 132,142; Tomas Kathol, 161, 127; Connor Wuebben and Levi Arens, 176, with Arens earning a 6-10 split conversion; Wyatt Wiebelhaus, 133,140; Reid Arens, 132; Nicholas Paltz.

In ranking on averages in C-2 District out of 38 bowlers:

Kathol, 20th, 129.3; Paltz, 24th, 128.1; Arens, 25th, 126.8, Wuebben, 125; Heimes, 27th, 124.1; Wiebelhaus, 29th, 118.5.

The men’s team finished with a 1–8  C-2 District mark.
