Obituary – Richard Gubbels

RANDOLPH — Richard Gubbels, 77, Randolph, died April 1, 2017, at his home in Randolph surrounded by his family.
Visitation, with a Christian Wake Service, was April 4 at St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church, Randolph.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., April 5, at St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church, with the Rev. Father Timothy Forget officiating.
Burial will be in St. Frances Catholic Cemetery, Randolph, with military rites by Alvin Kessler Post #5545 and American Legion Post #113, Randolph.
Pallbearers will be Richard’s grandsons and wives, Thomas and Ioana Hanna, Evan and Jordan Janssen, Nate and Andrea Gubbels, Jace Gubbels, Alex Kerkman and Keaton Backhaus; special angel, Bryan Hanna; and Teammates mentee, Jordan Merchant.
Honorary pallbearers will be Richard’s granddaughters and husbands, Ashley and Josh Stollberg, Heather Janssen, Robbyn and Josh Frost, Hannah Janssen, Kristina and Collin Swantek, Kelsey Backhaus, Katelyn Backhaus, Haley Kerkman, Emma Dominisse and Abby Kerkman
Arrangements are under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home, Randolph.
Richard John Gubbels was born March 18, 1940, at Randolph, to Walter and Irene (Gerber) Gubbels, Sr. He was a 1958 graduate of St. Frances Catholic High School, Randolph. After graduating, he began farming with his father near Randolph. Richard joined the United States Army Nov. 3, 1959, and was honorably discharged Aug. 2, 1961, and returned to farm with his father. Richard married Rita Ann Helena Reineke Aug. 1, 1964, at St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church, Randolph. The couple continued farming near Randolph until 2011, when they moved to Randolph.
Richard was a lifetime member of St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church, Randolph, where he served on the parish council and building and grounds committee; member Knights of Columbus Council #5143, serving as Grand Knight three times and nine years as Trustee; a member of John Deere 2-Cylinder Club; member of Tri County Cruisers; Charter Board member of Randolph Farm Supply; member American Legion Post #113 of Randolph, serving on the honor guard; and a Teammates mentor.
Hobbies Richard enjoyed were working on his John Deere tractors and old cars. He loved spending time with his grandkids, as well as attending their sporting events and his daily drives through the country.
Surviving Richard is his wife of 52 years, Rita Gubbels, Randolph; his five children and spouses, Jane and Larry Janssen, Randolph; Jill and Jeff Dominisse, Norfolk; John and Kathy Gubbels, Randolph; Regina and Scott Backhaus, Randolph; Rebecca and Jeff Kerkman, Neligh; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four siblings and spouses, Frances Lenhoff, Randolph; Walter and Detta Gubbels Jr., Randolph; Gilbert and Marian Gubbels, Cedar Falls, Iowa; and Donna and Jim Lackas, Randolph.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Bryan Hanna; brother, Ronald Gubbels, in infancy; father and mother-in-law, Joseph and Maxalinda Reineke; and four brothers-in-law, Charles Lenhoff Jr., Ronald Reineke, Don McIntosh and Sam Jones.
