Wynot girls open State title defense with pair of wins

Wynot — The Wynot Lady Blue Devils showed last week they are ready to defend their Class D2 state basketball title.

The Wynot girls dominated the first half of their opening game of the 2016-2017 season against the Bloomfield Queen Bees.

The Lady Blue Devils rolled to a 33-16 halftime lead as they cruised to the 58-35 win.

Nine players reached the scoring column in this game led by the Arkfeld twins. Cortney Arkfeld led all scorers with her 17 points and Skylar Arkfeld was right behind her with her 15 points and eight rebounds.

Carissa Kuchta contributed seven points to the Devils’ totals and Shaelee Planer came off the bench to score seven, as well.

Sarah Castaneda led the Queen Bees offense with 16 points and eight rebounds while Michelle Wachter hit a pair of 3-pointers late in the game to add eight points to Bloomfield’s totals.

The Queen Bees had trouble solving the Lady Blue Devils’ full court pressure in the opening quarter. Cortney Arkfeld  rattled in nine points for the Lady Devils and Shaelee Planer drained a 3-pointer as Wynot earned the 18-7 first-quarter lead.
