WESt POINT — The state’s top-rated Class D girls basketball teams battled from the opening tip off here Thursday until the final buzzer with the home town Guardian Angels Blue Jays earning the narrow 49-47 victory.
Defending D2 state champion Wynot is rated as the top team in its class, while GACC is rated as the top D1 team in the state.
The Blue Devils managed to lead in the game for three quarters only to see the Blue Jays rally in the final period and steal away the 49-47 win, taking the win on a last-second layup.
Lauren Wobken led the comeback scoring 13 of her 18 points in the final frame.
The contest was part of a very rare situation as the evening’s four games were separated by only a total of five points. In the girls JV game Wynot won by one on a pair of free throws, while in the boys JV game, GACC won by one point when Wynot missed a pair of freethrows in the final second. Then in the varsity girls game GACC squeaked out the win by two on a late layup and the Wynot boys won on a pair of free throws with no time left on the clock.
