Obituary – Rick Backer

Screenshot 2016-07-27 12.02.30RANDOLPH — Richard “Rick” Lee Backer, 56, Randolph, died July 15, 2016, at Yampa Valley Medical Center, Steamboat Springs, Colo., following a motorcycle accident.
Visitation and a Parish Vigil were Sunday at St. Frances de Chantal Catholic Church, Randolph, under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home, Randolph.
Funeral services were July 25 at St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church, Randolph, with Rev. Fr. Timothy Forget officiating.
Interment was in St. Frances Catholic Cemetery, Randolph.
Pallbearers were Rick’s nephews, Bruce Backer, Adam Backer, Andy Nordhues, Matt Nordhues, Gabe Backer, Austin Backer, Jordan Backer, Caiden Backer, Lane Bowers and Jonathan Bowers.
Honorary pallbearers were Rick’s grandkids, Jessa Backer, Shaw Backer, Dawson Backer, Roxy Backer, Christian Moore, Brenden Sweeney and Karson Backer.
Rick was born Oct. 5, 1959, at Osmond, to Paul and Bonnie (Jacobson) Backer. He graduated from Randolph High School in 1977. Rick worked for Terra for a few years in Randolph. He married Sandy Bowers June 30, 1979, at St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church, Randolph, and they made their home in Randolph. He worked for welding shops in Laurel and Wayne for a short time. For the past 28 years, Rick owned and operated Backer Trucking.
Rick enjoyed motorcycle riding, helping his kids and loved his grandkids. He enjoyed welding, playing the guitar and the time spent with the band the “R” Backers with Dan and Doug.
Rick was a member of St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church; past Future Farmers of America member and president for several years; member of ABATE of Nebraska aka American Bikers Aiming Towards Education, another, aka for this group, American Brothers Against Totalitarian Enactments serving as District #15 coordinator for nine years; member of Owner Operators Independent Drivers Association; and a member of the National Rifle Association.
Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Sandy Backer, Randolph; four children, Jim Backer, Randolph; Dusty and Pat Backer, Center, N.D.; Cody and Jennifer Backer, Randolph; Nathanial and Natalie Backer, Norfolk; seven grandchildren; four siblings, Dan and Joni Backer, Randolph; Gary Backer, Randolph; Kathie and Mark Nordhues, Randolph; Jeff and Rhonda Backer, Wayne; and many nieces and nephews.
Rick is preceded in death by his parents.
