Obituary – Norman Walter

Winfield, Iowa — Norman L. “Norm” Walter, 77, Winfield, Iowa, died Aug. 10, 2016, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Visitation and a Rosary were held Aug. 14 at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church.Screenshot 2016-08-17 11.46.09

The funeral Mass was Aug. 15, at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church with the Reverends Brian Shepley, Ed Fitzpatrick and Joseph Phung as celebrants.  Interment was in the Winfield-Scott Township Cemetery.

Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Born Feb. 14, 1939, in Fordyce, Norman Lavern was the son of Leonard and Veronica Hochstein Walter.  He was a 1957 graduate of Wynot High School, Wynot. After high school, Norm enlisted in the United States Army. Following his two-year enlistment, he attended Milford Trade School, Milford. He married Janice Hochstein Sept. 7, 1963, at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Bow Valley.

Always a builder, Norm started his own construction business and lived in Coleridge for nine years.  For the next several years, Norm moved his family many places as he built nursing homes for communities. In 1974, they moved to Winfield, where he resided until his death. For the last 20 years of his career, Norm worked for Merit Construction, retiring in 2000.

Norm was a master woodworker and craftsman. A member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, he built multiple wood products for the church auction.

Along with his wife of 52 years, Janice, Norm is also survived by two sons, Brian Walter, Winfield, Iowa, and Dean (Sharla) Winter,  Winfield, Iowa; two daughters, Kim (Thomas) Lampe, Red Wing, Minn., and Michelle (Brian) Walter Blodgett, Washington, Iowa; and two brothers, Arlan Walter,  Hartington, and Kenneth Walter, Ringold, Ga.; eight grandchildren, Caleb, Danielle, Drew, Kelcey, Jordan, Paige, Gavin, and Aaron; and five great-grandchildren, Kinsley, Elyse, Talon, Graham and Drake.

Preceding Norm in death were his parents, and a grandson, Halen Lampe.

Memorials have been established to HCI Care Services and St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in his memory.
