WYNOT — Harley L. Gowery, 86, Wynot, died Jan. 5, 2016, at Golden Living Center, Hartington.
Visitation and a prayer service were Jan. 8 at the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington, and continued Saturday, at the church.
Funeral Services were Jan. 9 at the First Congregational U.C.C., Hartington, with the Rev. Gary Kimm officiating.
Burial was at the Wynot Cemetery, Wynot.
Pallbearers were Harley’s grandsons, Craig Gowery, Tyler Gowery, Tanner Maxon, Matthew Maxon, Nate McLaughlin and Connor McLaughlin.
Honorary pallbearers were his granddaughters, Shannon Heimes, Jenna Hans, Heather Hansen, Heidi Magorian, Haley Gowery, Dr. Ashley Tiahrt and Kylee McLaughlin.
Harley Lowell Gowery was born Groundhog’s Day, Feb. 2, 1929, at home on Brooky Bottom, to George McKinley and Sarah Leota (Larson) Gowery. He attended Pleasant Grove country school through the eighth grade and graduated from Wynot High School in 1945 at the age of 16. Harley married Shirley Driver June 10, 1954, at the Methodist Church, Wynot. They lived on Brooky Bottom all of their married life. Harley farmed until his retirement and then enjoyed checking the hills and pastures on his four-wheeler. He was involved in many farm, community and church boards over the years – The Brooky Bottom Telephone Co, District 7 School Board, ASCS, the Election board for over 60 years, Farm Bureau, and the First Congregational United Church of Christ.
Harley enjoyed hunting and fishing, Wynot sports, work, and was an avid reader. He enjoyed family and every one of his grandchildren.
Harley is survived by his wife of 61 and one half years, Shirley, Wynot; five children and spouses, Terry and Donna Gowery, Wynot; Becky and Gary Huser, Sioux City, Iowa; Lonny Gowery, Minden; Nancy and Glen Maxon, Laurel; and Sherry and Tom McLaughlin, Papillion; 13 grandchildren, Shannon (Tyler) Heimes, Jenna (Justin) Hans, Tyler Gowery, Craig (Ashley) Gowery, Heather (Brad) Hansen, Heidi (Pat) Magorian, Haley Gowery, Dr. Ashley (John) Tiahrt, Tanner and Matthew Maxon, and Nathan, Kylee and Connor McLaughlin; 15 great-grandchildren; one brother, Darrell (Darlene) Gowery, Marble Falls, Texas; three nieces; two nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Leota Gowery; a sister, Joyce Asmussen; and brother-in-law, Emmett Asmussen.
Memorials are preferred to the Wynot Cemetery Association.
