Obituary – Gerald Meyer

Visitation and a vigil service were Sunday at the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington, and continued Monday one hour prior to services

Mass of Christian Burial was Aug. 29 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Hartington, with the Rev. Owen Korte officiating.

Burial was at St. Michael’s Cemetery, Hartington, with military rites by the Hartington VFW Post #5253.

Pallbearers were James Meyer, Taylor Madarassy, Ron Kramer, Melkon Andonian, Bob Meyer, Steve Meyer, Darin Bruening, Jonathan Meyer, Bob Eskens and Richard Travers.

Gerald F. Meyer was born Sept. 7, 1938, in Hartington, to Frank A. and Sarah Maria (Lange) Meyer. He grew up in Hartington and graduated from Holy Trinity High School in 1956. Jerry worked for Clarence Hoesing from 1956-1958, and his first job was to build the bleachers at the Cedar County Fairgrounds. He then worked for John Neu at the Creamery from 1959-1960 picking up cream and eggs. Jerry married Alice Marie Eskens June 27, 1960, in St. James. He served in the U.S. Army from 1961-1962. He had basic training in Colorado and was stationed at Fort McClellan. When his father died in 1962, Jerry was granted a hardship leave from the Army to help his mother and farm. He was a dairy farmer east of Hartington until 1995. Jerry intended to retire, but instead began working for Carhart Lumber from 1995-2010. His wife, Alice, died Aug. 20, 2004, at the age of 66. He then met Sherry Bear in 2009 while square dancing. They belonged to the Town Twirlers Square Dancing group from Laurel.

Jerry loved animals, farming, square dancing and woodworking. He made many woodwork creations for family and friends. He currently was working part-time for the County Department of Roads.

Jerry is survived by his two children, Lisa and husband, Ed Madarassy, Ennis, Mont.; son, Larry, and wife, Shelli Meyer, Louisville, Colo.; his gal, Sherry Bear, Hartington; three grandsons, James Meyer, Watford City, N.D.; Taylor Madarassy, Ennis, Mont.; and Jonathan Meyer, Louisville, Colo.; granddaughter, Kathryn Meyer, Louisville, Colo.; three brothers and spouses, Edwin Meyer, Hartington; Ken and Mary Meyer, Moorhead, Minn.; and Bill and Pat Meyer, Hartington.

Jerry was preceded in death by his father, Frank, in 1962; wife, Alice, in 2004; daughter, Cheryl Meyer, in 1970; sister-in-law, Betty Meyer, in 2005; and mother, Sarah, in 2013.
