Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Nov. 23, at United Methodist Church, Laurel, with Rev. Jaime Farias officiating.
Honorary pallbearers will be Gerald’s granddaughters, Lark Rich, Tori Cunningham, Kathryn Cunningham, Jade Cunningham and Megan Cunningham.
Active pallbearers will be Gerald’s grandsons, Jeremy Cunningham, Matthew Cunningham, Joshua Cunningham, Andrew Cunningham, Kyle Cunningham, Tate Cunningham, Nathan Christensen, Phillip Cunningham and Jason Christensen
Interment, with Military Rites, will be in the Laurel Cemetery, Laurel.
Arrangements are under the direction of Hasemann Funeral Home, Laurel.
Gerald “Gerry” Walter Cunningham was born Dec. 6, 1932, at Randolph, to Grace (Paulson and Earl Cunningham. He graduated from Randolph High School in 1950. Gerry married Ardis Stingley Feb. 25, 1953, at the United Methodist Church, Randolph. They enjoyed 62 years of marriage and were blessed with five children. Gerry served in the U.S. Army from March 1953 to February 1955, part of which he was stationed in Austria. Following his military service he farmed, managed the Laurel Gambles Store, worked for Century Manufacturing Company as a district and regional sales representative, sold real estate, and was the Veterans Service Officer for Cedar County. In retirement, Gerry and Ardis sold advertising together. He was awarded the Top Salesman of the Year award from Century each year he was eligible, and was honored to serve as the president of the Nebraska Veterans Service Officers Association.
Gerry was a devoted husband and father and actively involved in the Laurel Community. He was a member of the United Methodist Church (past Treasurer), Home Builders, American Legion, VFW, Chamber of Commerce, Volunteer Fire Department, EMT, Lions Club (past President), City Council, and was active in 4-H. He supported activities at the Laurel school for over 50 years.
Raising horses was a hobby he shared with his immediate and extended family. There are many fond memories of the time spent caring for and showing horses.
Gerald is survived by five children, Kevin (Lisa) Cunningham, Grand Island; Kerby (Naomi) Cunningham, Beatrice; Toby (Patti) Cunningham, Laurel; Jana (Arnie) Christensen, Lincoln; and Joedy (Katty) Cunningham, Vienna, Austria; 14 grandchildren, Matthew and Janelle Cunningham, New York, N.Y.; Andrew Cunningham, Grand Island; Kathryn Cunningham, Baltimore, Md.; Jeremy and Sheri Cunningham, Omaha; Joshua and Megan Cunningham, Lindale, Texas; Kyle and Kelli Cunningham, Beatrice; Lark and Trevor Rich, Sioux City, Iowa; Tori Cunningham, Kansas City, Kan.; Tate Cunningham, Laurel; Jade Cunningham, Laurel; Nathan Christensen, Lincoln; Jason Christensen, Lincoln; Phillip Cunningham, Mertingen, Germany; Megan Cunningham, Bath, England; six great-grandchildren, Jenna, Sierra and Jackson Cunningham; Isaac, Colton and Aleigha Rich; brother, Don Cunningham, Dixon; a sister, Deanna (Dan) Gansebom, Osmond; sister-in-law, Elda Cunningham, Wausa; and brother-in-law, Marlyn Stingley, Conroy, Texas; nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Gerald was preceded in death by his wife, Ardis, Jan. 18, 2016; parents, Earl and Grace Cunningham; parents-in-law, Glen and Claribel Stingley; brother, Dean Cunningham; sisters-in-law, Delores Stingley and Sharolyn Cunningham; and niece, Terri Suhr.
