The HNS Student Council, which includes a group of 7-12 grade students at Hartington-Newcastle School, found a unique way to help people give a gift to others.

Student Council sponsor Sharon Lammers and Elementary Principal Sarah Edwards teamed up to bring “Days of Giving” from an idea to reality.

“It was a free day to share items and shop for your families,” Edwards said.

People had been asked to share items they no longer need or have never used. It was similar to a garage sale although shoppers did not have to pay for the item they selected.

A number of people showed up for the two-day weekend event in the gym at Hartington-Newcastle Public Schools.

Edwards is very thankful for the number of people that supported “Days of Giving,” but it was the smiles Edwards saw on the faces that told the story on whether the day had been successful.

“People were excited. I saw a lot of smiles,” Edwards said. “The day was for any one who wanted to come. People had things they wanted to share with someone but they didn’t know what to do with it. It was also a good time for them to find something they wanted. We had a great group of people come and participate.”
