RANDOLPH — The LCC Bears came out on top in a back-and-forth affair here Tuesday to surprise the Hartington-Newcastle Wildcats in first-round SubDistrict C2-7 action.
The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Bears took a 19-16 first-quarter advantage, but Hartington bounced back in the second frame outscore the Bears 16-11 for a 32-30 halftime lead.
The Cats got off to a fast start to open the second half, building a quick five-point lead. The Bears put together a 14-12 third-quarter run to knot the game at 44-44 heading into the final frame.
A trip to the free throw line allowed the Bears to extend their lead with 14 seconds left on the clock. Two missed shots from the charity line, allowed Hartington-Newcastle one last chance to go for the win.
Two failed attempts saw the ball fall to the court into a group of celebrating Bears. The Wildcats finish the season 16-8, and the Bears move onto face Cedar Catholic at 7 p.m. Thursday.
