Norfolk — Mildred J. “Mickie” Hish, 93, formerly of Pierce, died April 28, 2015, at Faith Regional Health Services, Norfolk.
Visitation and a rosary were May 3 at the church.
Services were May 4 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Pierce, with Rev. Keith Rezac officiating.
Burial will be a private family service at a later date.
Pallbearers are Russ Ronspies, Randy Ronspies, Mark Ronspies, Mike Ronspies, Gary Ronspies and Roger Ronspies.
Stonacek Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
Mickie was born in Pierce to Reinhard and Julianna (Fuchs) Ronspies Feb. 23, 1922. She graduated from Pierce High School in 1939. The following year, she began her 40-year teaching career as a teacher in a rural one-room schoolhouse while attending summer school at Wayne State College. While teaching at Hartington High School, Mickie met Gerry Hish, her husband of 62 years. Mildred and Gerry were married in Pierce. They graduated together from Wayne State College in 1951, and moved to Laurel to teach. While there, Mickie taught English and coached the drama and speech programs, leading them to two years of superior ratings in all events of the state competition. In 1956, Mickie and Gerry moved to Redding, Calif. Mickie taught at Shasta Lake, Enterprise and Redding school districts until her retirement in 1982. She was also active in many church events and in her children’s school activities.
She was an avid reader, loved to travel and most of all loved family gatherings. She had been a resident at Heritage of Bel-Air Nursing Home since 2013.
Mickie is survived by her three children, son, Don Hish, Seattle, Wash., and daughters, Barbara Steidley, Kalama, Wash., and Mary Ray, Citrus Heights, Calif.; her siblings, Dennis and wife, Shirley Ronspies, Pierce, and Julie and husband, Don Blotz, Discovery Bay, Calif.; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Mickie was preceded in death by husband, Gerald F. Hish, in 2011; brothers, Wilfred and Eugene; and one sister, Marianne.
