O’NEILL — After allowing five runs in the first two innings in Monday’s State elimination game, the deficit turned out to be too big to overcome for the Hartington American Legion Senior baseball team.
Hartington couldn’t quite close the gap, and exited the tournament with a 7-2 loss to Malcolm after trying to move their way back up through the loser’s bracket.
“We dug ourselves in a hole early with some missed pitches and errors,” said Hartington Coach Cale Haberer. “We made a comeback but we couldn’t overcome our early mistakes.”
Despite the loss, the 21-6 team finishes the 2013 season on a high note. The Hartington team claimed the Elkhorn Valley League Championship, were crowned District Champions, and were State Qualifiers.
Hartington’s defense just couldn’t get settled down Monday as the locals gave up three runs in the first and two runs in the second inning due to Hartington errors and well-placed Malcolm hits.
Hartington struggled to answer back with runs of their own.
In the bottom of the second, Zach Wuebben provided a glimmer of hope when he made it all the way to third on a walk, steal, and fielder’s choice from a Ross Hegge hit. With two outs, Cody Lammers started a rally by hitting the hole right over the second baseman’s head to score Wuebben. After a Jared Wiebelhaus walk, he and Lammers were left on base when the third out appeared as a strikeout.
