SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — For the second straight year, the Wynot Expos exited the South Dakota State Class B Amateur Baseball Tournament after just two games.
The Expos, who have made it to the state tournament every year now since 1994, earned an easy 5-1 win over Wessington Springs to open the tourney last Wednesday. Wynot then fell 8-5 to Akron, Iowa on Sunday.
In Wednesday’s win, Eric Hames led the team on the mound, giving up just four hits and striking out four in the complete-game win, while not allowing any free passes.
Lee Heimes led the Expo offense with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate. He also collected two stolen bases and scored two runs.
Ryan Heimes and Scott Morrison were the only other Expos to collect more than one hit, each going 2-for-4 for the game.
The Expos took control early, plating a run in the first frame after lead-off batter Chase Rolfes reached on a walk, stole second and came home on Lee Heimes’ single.
Wynot extended its lead by opening the fourth frame with a pair of singles by Ryan Heimes and Lee Heimes.
A hit and run allowed Ryan Heimes to score on Lee Heimes’ single.
Lee Heimes then came home on Scott Heine’s RBI single to give the Expos a 3-0 lead.
