HARTINGTON — The defending state champion Cedar Catholic Lady Trojans opened the 2013 season with a two-set win over Humphrey St. Francis during triangular action here Thursday night.
The Lady Trojans took advantage of several Flyer errors to build a quick 11-3 lead in the first game.
Karly Noecker and Kayla Hochstein provided the early firepower. both picking up a pair of early kills. Hochstein also slammed back an ace block.
Noecker, Bailey Steffen and Alli Walter added kills and Emily Feilmeier dropped in an ace serve to help Cedar extend its lead to 20-7.
Cedar earned the win on match point after Kayla Hochstein ended a long volley with an ace block to give the Lady Trojans a 25-9 decision in the first set.
A Bailey Steffen kill and an Alli Walter block helped Cedar build a 6-1 early lead in the second set.
The Flyers took adantage of some Cedar mistakes to put four more points on the board, but back to back kills by Karly Noecker ans Kayla Hochstein gave Cedar a 12-5 advantage.
