Area students will head back to school next week

HARTINGTON — Another summer has come and gone and area students will soon be heading back to school.

School begins Aug. 14 for all Hartington schools with first-day dismissal at 2 p.m.

Buses will run and both breakfast and lunch are being served at HPS.

Teachers officially return Aug. 12, though some have already started preparing for the year, said Hartington Public Principal Russ Flamig.

Major renovations were done at the Hartington Public Elementary School.

The most significant was the installation of walls between the classrooms, which eliminates the last of the Open Concept education platform. This project also included new floors, wiring, plumbing and cabinets, as well.

Demolition started May 15 and Flamig said the project will be finished in time for school.

The total project cost was about $730,000, which is about $300,000 below the initially price, according to Hartington Public Superintendent Randy Anderson.

Two new people have joined the HPS staff. Leigh Haselhorst will be the head volleyball coach and new third grade teacher.

Jason Folkers has been named the assistant football, basketball and track coach.

The school will hold an open house Aug. 13, from 6:30-8 p.m., at the high school.
