HARTINGTON — Guns and other items were involved in some recent thefts that occurred in Hartington.
During the first week of April some unlocked cars were entered and items were taken, according to Sheriff Larry Koranda.
“A couple of guns were taken from one vehicle and the other vehicle had electronic devices and a purse that are missing,” Koranda said.
The vehicles were parked in residential area and the owners reported the thefts the following day when they found the items were missing.
“People need to make sure that they lock their vehicles,” Koranda said.
The incident is under investigation.
It is legal to keep handguns, shotguns and rifles in a vehicle if they are not concealed.
“Handguns and shotguns can be kept in vehicles, but they have to be unloaded,” Koranda said. “The guns have to be out in the open – they can not be in the glove box or under the seat. They can not be concealed.”
