Cedar easily races past Wisner-Pilger

HARTINGTON  — Cedar  Catholic not only had to battle Wisner-Pilger Thursday night, but high winds and a driving rain, as well.

Despite the 35-45 mile an hour winds, which pushed a fierce sideways rain, the Trojans were able to top Wisner-Pilger 34-12.

The win evened Cedar’s season at 4-4 and put the Trojans back in the playoffs.

A pair of young Cedar players put together career nights to lead the Trojans.

Sophomore running back Ryan Becker ripped through the Gator defense for 200 yards on 32 carries. His longest run of the night was a 53-yarder to paydirt.

Junior linebacker Noah Miller tore through the Gator defense to collect a team-high 22 tackles on the night.

Cedar Catholic Coach Chad Cattau said the running game worked to perfection Thursday.

“I really felt that the biggest thing was we needed to come out and play physical and establish the line of scrimmage right away.  I felt our linemen really did that and put the game on their shoulders.  With the weather being a major factor in throwing the ball, we knew we would have to run it between the tackles most of the night,” Cattau said. “We really wanted to try to get 4-5 yards a carry early knowing that eventually we could turn those same runs into big plays for us.”

Taylor Kathol got the offense going with a seven-yard TD run in the first frame. Becker followed that up with his 53-yarder. The Trojans extended the lead to 20-0 on a 15-yard Becker run. The Gators took advantage of  a Cedar Catholic special teams mistake to get their first points of the night in the third quarter.
