HARTINGTON — Summer ends next week for area students.
The 2012-13 school year opens on Thursday, Aug 16 for K-12 students at the Wynot Public School.
The first day of school for the Wynot Preschool will be on Aug 20. Fifteen students are enrolled in the Preschool, which is in its third year.
The total school enrollment for pre-school through 12th grade is 151 students.
The Wynot School will be continuing its modified four-day school week, Monday through Thursday, which will start in October.
There will be one new face among the teaching staff at Wynot.
Amy Skinner has been hired to teach high school math.
The Wynot School is involved in the One-on-one Initiative which ensures all high school students will have their own laptop, according to Principal Rich Higgins.
“The freshman students will all have new laptops this year,” Higgins said. “The students keep the laptops all four years of high school.”
Students, parents, staff and Wynot area residents will have a chance to take part in the Breakfast for Champions on Sunday morning, Aug. 26.
All proceeds from the event will go to the athletic department.
The Breakfast for Champions kicks off the season. It is open to everyone,” Higgins said.
Maintenance and remodeling at the school over the summer months have been completed.
New carpet was installed in three classrooms. Ceilings were lowered in some of the rooms and in the hallway and windows were replaced. The office area and the computer lab were also upgraded.
The Hartington Public School building will have a new look for junior high and high school students who will be back in the classrooms on Aug 14.
Walls have been constructed in the classrooms which had originally been part of an open concept design.
Science classrooms and the Family Consumer & Science classroom have been remodeled. The Family Consumer & Science classroom has new cabinets and now has three kitchen areas.
Two hallways running through the high school portion of the building have been extended and exit doors have been installed on the north end of each hallway. The classrooms and the hallways have a new coat of paint and new windows are now in place.
Finishing touches are still taking place on the summer’s remodeling project but it will be completed before students head to the classrooms according to Principal Russell Flamig.
An Open House for the community is scheduled for Monday evening, Aug 13, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
“It’s a free barbeque. It will be in the commons area,” Flamig said. “People will have a chance to tour the building and see the remodeling that has been done.”
The first day of school on Tuesday, Aug 14 will include an early dismissal at two pm.
Wed, August 15 will be the first full day of school for the students.
The first Hartington Public football game is scheduled for Aug 24 at Humphrey.
Hartington co-ops with Crofton School for Girl’s Golf. The first meet of the season will be at Wayne on Aug 24.
The first volley ball game for the Wild Cats will take place at the Wynot Invitational at five pm on Aug 30.
The first cross-country meet will also be on Aug 30 at Niobrara.
CEDAR CATHOLIC AND HOLY TRINITY SCHOOLS
Three new staff members will be in the class rooms at Cedar Catholic and Holy Trinity Schools when the 2012/13 school year opens.
Robert Koerting is the new high school Science teacher and Staci Shotkoski will teach Spanish to high school students.
Sara Steffen will be a teacher’s aide for the elementary students.
An all-school mass will held before classes start on the first two days of school for students at Cedar Catholic and Holy Trinity School.
Kindergarten through twelfth grade students at will head back to school on Tuesday, Aug 14. There will be an early dismissal at two pm.
The evening before school starts, on Monday, Aug 13, there will be a Seventh Grade Orientation.
An ice cream social will run from 6:30 to 7:30 on Aug 13 for the Holy Trinity Elementary School according to Princ Terry Kathol.
“It is open to the students and the parents,” Kathol said.
A senior class meeting will also be held on the same evening at 7:30.
Holy Trinity Pre-school opens on Wednesday, Aug 15 for junior kindergarteners and the four-year old class. The program for three-year olds starts on Thursday, Aug 16.
The first Girl’s Golf meet will be on Aug 24 at Wayne.
The Trojan football team will play Oakland/Craig on Aug 30. It will be a home game.
The first volleyball game of the season will be a Tri-angular at Battle Creek on Aug 30.
Cedar Catholic co-ops with Hartington Public for cross country. The first meet is scheduled for Aug 30 at Niobrara.
