Newcastle — LaVern “Vern” Walton, 84, Newcastle, died Aug. 29, 2012, at the Sanford Medical Center, Sioux Falls, S.D., following a short illness.
Visitation was Sept. 1 at the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington.
A private family graveside service followed at the Coleridge City Cemetery, Coleridge, with Rev. Gary Kimm officiating, and military honors provided by the Coleridge American Legion Post 114.
Vern was born July 1, 1928, at Hartington, to Joseph and Anna (Muck) Walton. He was raised in the St. James and Wynot area and attended Wynot High School. He was proud of his military service having served 21 years in the Navy, from 1945-1966. Following his discharge at the Great Lakes Naval Base, Chicago, Ill., in 1966, he met and married Charlotte Sarko, Crown Point, Ind. They had one son, Joseph.
Vern was an auto mechanic and retired after 20 years in the business. He and his family returned to his boyhood home of Nebraska in 1986.
He enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid hunter.
Vern is survived by his wife, Charlotte Walton, Newcastle; a son and his wife, Joseph and Mara Walton, Sioux Falls, S.D.; two sisters-in-law, Catherine Zitz, Cecile and Tom Wilbourne; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers, Merle, Howard and Alva Walton.
