BOW VALLEY — Genevieve M. Kathol, 85, Bow Valley, died April 9, 2012, at the Golden Living Center, Hartington.
Visitation and a vigil service were April 13 at the church.
Mass of Christian Burial was April 14 at Holy Family (Sts. Peter and Paul) Catholic Church, Bow Valley, with the Rev. Eric Olsen officiating.
Burial was at Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Bow Valley.
Pallbearers were her grandsons, Dustin Kathol, Paul Tunink, Evan Tunink, Matthew Kathol, Cory Podoll, Kyle Podoll, Tyler Promes, Zach Kathol, Austin Kathol, Tony Kathol, Ethan Kathol, Jamie Kathol and Curtis Kathol.
Honorary Pallbearers were Genevieve’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington.
Genevieve Marie Kathol was born Aug. 6, 1926, in Bow Valley, to Hugo and Mathilda (Sudbeck) Stappert. She went to grade school at Sts. Peter and Paul, Bow Valley, and graduated from Holy Trinity High School, Hartington, in 1944. She graduated from Wayne State Teachers College and began teaching in the country schools. Genevieve had many stories of teaching in the 1940s. She married Gilbert George Kathol June 21, 1949, in Bow Valley. They had 10 children. Gilbert died Sept. 18, 1993, at the age of 71. In 1994, Genevieve moved to an apartment in Yankton, S.D. She worked for Dale Electronics and Gurney Seed and Nursery, Yankton, for many years.
Genevieve had been a resident of the Golden Living Assisted Living and then the Nursing Home, Hartington, for the past four years.
Genevieve was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, as well as St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, Yankton. She worked on many church and funeral committees while in Yankton. She belonged to the Christian Mothers and the Church Guild. Genevieve was an avid gardener and loved to bake. She was active at the Yankton Senior Center and loved to line dance.
She is survived by her 10 children and their spouses, Bonnie Kathol, Scottsdale, Ariz.; Ron and Marilyn Kathol, Crofton; Rose and Dennis Promes, Wynot; Jean Kathol, Indiana, Pa.; Lyle and Lea Ann Kathol, Norfolk; Alice and Ryan Podoll, Norfolk; Tammy and Kevin Promes, Norfolk; Claire and Sherrie Kathol, Glidden, Iowa; Merlyn and Brenda Kathol, Sioux City, Iowa; Tim and Jean Kathol, Bow Valley; 23 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Norma Dendinger, Coleridge; and sister-in-law, Claudette Stappert, Bow Valley.
Genevieve was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gilbert; two brothers, Charles and Jim Stappert; brother-in-law, Jack Dendinger; and sister-in-law, Theresa M. Stappert.
