NORFOLK — Dale S. Cunningham, 91, Norfolk, formerly of Randolph, died Aug. 17, 2012, at the Norfolk Veterans Home.
Visitation was Aug. 20 at United Methodist Church, Randolph.
Johnson Funeral Home, Randolph, was in charge of arrangements.
Funeral services were Aug. 21 at United Methodist Church, Randolph, with Rev. Brian Fong officiating.
Interment was in Randolph Cemetery, Randolph, with Military Rites performed by V.F.W Alvin Kessler Post #5545 and American Legion Post #113 of Randolph.
Pallbearers were Charles Cunningham, Tom Cunningham, Neil Hesse, Vernon Hesse, Doug Albers and Brad Albers.
Honorary pallbearers were Dale’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Dale was born Nov. 5, 1920, at Randolph, to William and Nina (Caster) Cunningham. He attended Cedar County rural school near Randolph and in 1999 was awarded a high school diploma. He entered the United States Navy during World War II serving from April 21, 1945, to Sept. 17, 1946. Dale married Jane “Betty” Dowling Jan. 14, 1951, at the Presbyterian Church, Randolph. The couple farmed, milked cows, and fed cattle and hogs for 31 years with Dale’s brother, Boyd. After he retired from farming, Dale worked at Jerry’s Hilltop for over 25 years. He was a 50+ year member of United Methodist Church, Randolph; served as Treasurer of Cedar County District #115 for many years; was a charter member of Randolph Senior Center; a member of V.F.W. Alvin Kessler Post #5545 and a member of American Legion Post #113 of Randolph, and he was an officer in the Town Twirlers Square Dance Club, Laurel.
Dale’s hobbies included his love of fishing and playing cards. He was an avid Husker Football fan, milked many cows over the years, and like to do his gardening.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Jane “Betty” Cunningham, Norfolk; three children and spouses, Sheila and Craig Swanson, Omaha; Nancy and Eugene Jensen, Winside; and Jim and Kathy Cunningham, Norfolk; eight grandchildren, Larry and Kelly Schutt, Hoskins; Robert Schutt and friend, Katie, Randolph; Donald Schutt and friend, Shawna, Randolph; Shauna and Ted Randall, Lincoln; Jenna Cunningham and friend, Tyler, Las Vegas, Nev.; Cheryl Swanson, Omaha; Jared Cunningham, Norfolk; Tiffany and Dan Shimonsky, Lompoc, Calif.; six great-grandchildren, Britanie Randall, Braydon Randall and Brylee Randall, all of Lincoln; and Gavin Schutt, Hadleigh Schutt and Aftyn Schutt, all of Hoskins; eight sisters, Vera Remington, Yankton, S.D.; Eva Dowling, Idaho; Leila and LeRoy Brummels, Wayne; Flo Lenzen, Laurel; Audrey and George Hinrich, Laurel; Wilma Wiemers, Laurel; Alice and John Moehlenhoff, Creighton; Doris and Bill Dowling, Hastings; and one sister-in-law, Ellen Cunningham, Bloomfield; and many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
Dale is preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Boyd Cunningham; and four sisters, Velma Dowling, Aulda Cunningham, Helen Burgel and Irma Remington.
