WYNOT — The Wynot Lady Blue Devils took on some of the best teams in the state last week.
Two of the Lewis and Clark Conference’s top volleyball teams squared off Thursday with Winside finally squeaking out the five-set thriller.
The Lady Devils traveled to Wisner Saturday and walked away with a win over Class C1 powerhouse Wisner-Pilger and Class C2’s Neligh-Oakdale before falling to the C1 St. Paul girls.
On Thursday, the Wynot and Winside matched point for point in the first set before Winside edged the Lady Devils, 25-23. The next match was an exact duplicate, again ending in a 25-23 setback for Wynot.
The Big Blue turned up the heat in the third frame, rolling to a 25-13 win to stave off elimination. Wynot won the next match 25-20 to send it into a fifth and final contest. That game didn’t end in regulation, as Winside had to put down two extra points, before finally topping Wynot 17-15.
“Wow, what a match,” Wynot Coach Tammy Wieseler said after the game. “I think we all got our money’s worth tonight.”
Wieseler said her team could not be consistant at the net against the 15-4 Lady Cats.
“Both teams played well at times. We were very strong at the net blocking, then at times I felt we were one step behind, Coach Wieseler said.
The JV game was just as big of a battle, with Wynot finally pulling out the win, 26-28, 25-12, 15-13.

It took five sets to accomplish, but the Lady Devils managed to knock off one of the state’s top Class D1 teams last Friday.
Wynot won the first set 25-22, but fell 22-25 in the second set. The Lady Devils bounced back for the narrow 25-23 win in the third set, but fell hard in the fourth set, 25-10. The Big Blue came back strong in the final set for the 15-11 win.
”Wow, Another exciting match. We knew what this team’s strengths were and we worked really hard to shut down those strengths,” Coach Wieseler said. “We know our blocking was one of the keys to the game and our girls blocked well.”
The Lady Devils now boast a 14-3 record.
