WAYNE — Mabel Carlson, 91, Wayne, formerly of Norfolk, died April 9, 2011, at Providence Medical Center, Wayne.
Visitation will be 9 a.m. to service time, April 13, at United Methodist Church, Laurel.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., April 13, at United Methodist Church, Laurel, with Rev. Jaime Farias officiating.
Interment will be in the Laurel Cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers will be Mabel’s nephew and family, Danny and Lynne Penland, and Michael and Kristine.
Active pallbearers will be Chuck Carlson, Ted Carlson, Steve Obermeyer, Gary Kavanaugh, Pat Kavanaugh, Ryan McCoy and Frank Wickett.
Arrangements are under the direction of Hasemann Funeral Home, Wayne.
Mabel Elizabeth Carlson was born Oct. 10, 1919, at Jamestown, N.D., to Adolph and Matilda (Johnson) Stuff. She lived at rural Courtenay, N.D., until 1930, when her family moved to Jamestown, N.D. She graduated from Jamestown High School in 1939. Mabel was employed as a nurse’s aide at St. Alexius Hospital, Bismarck, N.D. Later, she did secretarial work at several businesses, including, Alaska Travel Control, Seattle, Wash.; Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company, Trenton, N.J.; M&H Gasoline Company, Fargo, N.D.; Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Company, Great Falls, Mont.; and the State Office of North Dakota Farmers Union, Jamestown, N.D. Mabel married Oscar Carlson Oct. 13, 1963, at the First United Methodist Church, Jamestown, where she was a member. The couple farmed near Laurel, until they retired and moved to Norfolk in 1983.
While living near Laurel, Mabel was the United Methodist Church secretary for a time. She was a member of United Methodist Women.
Besides office work, Mabel enjoyed gardening, reading, photography, drawing, and writing poetry. She also enjoyed having pets, such as dogs and cats on the farm.
Mabel is survived by one nephew and wife, Danny and Lynne Penland and their children, Michael and Kristine, Eugene, Ore.; step children, Janet and husband Gary Kavanaugh, Laurel; Ted Carlson, Brandon, S.D.; Richard Carlson, Ponca; two step granddaughters, Debra and husband, Steve Obermeyer, Wakefield, and Colleen Kavanaugh, Tampa, Fla.; sisters-in-law, Violet and husband, Keith Wickett, Laurel; Esther Craig, Topeka, Kan.; Bonnie Green, St. Louis, Mo.; and brother-in-law and wife, Vic and Arlyce Carlson, Concord; and her special friend, Norman Stover.
Mabel was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Oscar in 2006; four sisters, Bernita Penland, Beatrice, Dorothy and Blanche Stuff; and one step son, Robert Carlson.
