Wildcats open season with title

Hartington High School senior Neil Kramer bolts toward one of the first hurdles during action in Thursday’s season-opening Cedar Catholic Invitational at the Hartington Community Complex. Kramer claimed gold in the event. He also won the other three events he entered Thursday to help the Wildcats earn top honors in the boys’ division of the meet.

HARTINGTON —  Neil Kramer led the Hartington boys to a track title here Thursday, while a team effort helped the Cedar Catholic girls earn runner-up honors.
Hartington racked up 159 points to easily outdistance Battle Creek for the Cedar Catholic Invitational crown.
Crofton edged Cedar by three-and-a-half points, 131-127.5, to earn the girls’ title.
The Cedar girls picked up four golds in the meet.

Tracy Peitz won the triple jump, while Lexi Steffen earned top honors in the high jump and Katelyn Dickes claimed the 300-meter hurdles. The Cedar 4×800 relay team of Katelyn Dickes, Tracy Peitz, Megan Kaiser, and Emily Schrempp also earned gold.
“I was very pleased with the way both our boys and girls competed for the first meet,” Cedar Catholic Coach Chad Cattau said. “Everyone did a nice job of not worrying about the weather and really working hard throughout the day. We need to make sure we continue to work hard so we put ourselves into position to be successful. It’s been a very enjoyable and hard working group thus far so we’re really looking at improving in all areas throughout the season.”
Besides Kramer’s wins in the 110 and 300-meter hurdles, he also claimed the high jump and triple jump.
Hartington’s Adam Hochstein and Chad Miller both walked away from the meet with a pair of golds.
Hochstein won the 400-meter and 1,600-meter races. Chad Miller earned gold in the 200-meter dash and in the pole vault. The Hartington 4×800 meter relay team rounded out the day with a gold, finishing the race in 9:07.8 to easily top Crofton. Running the relay for HPS were: Pat Wortmann, Cody Fischer, Riley Haug and Adam Hochstein.
“This was a good meet for us to start the outdoor season,” Hartington Coach Blair Kalin said. “We had a lot of contributors to this win.”
Coach Kalin said some excellent team and individual performances were turned in.
”Pat Wortmann did great. He is just 12 seconds off the school record in the two-mile. He has really been running well in that event, Adam Hochstein has also been running well in his events. Neil Kramer is running some very good times for this early in the season,” Kalin said.
