HPS Wildcats claim another track title

Hartington High School’s Adam Hochstein tears around the track ahead of Wynot’s Kyle Gartner during recent action at the Hartington Community Complex. Hochstein won both the 400-meter run and the 1,600-meter run to help the Wildcats earn yet another track title.

HARTINGTON — The spring of 2011 is turning out to be quite a special year for the Hartington Wildcat boys’ track team.
The ‘Cats claimed another track title last week by winning their own invitational, an event that was moved to Thursday because of Tuesday’s inclement weather.

“This meet was a good win for our team. There were some quality teams there. We had some good performances, even though the weather was not great,” Hartington Coach Blair Kalin said.
Neil Kramer and Chad Miller once again led the team.
Kramer won both hurdle events and took top honors in the high jump and triple jump.
Miller claimed gold in the 100-meter, 200-meter and pole vault.
Adam Hochstein and Pat Wortmann weren’t far behind. Hochstein claimed gold in both the 400 meter and 1,600-meter runs. Wortmann finished first in the 3,200-meter run.
The win was a true team effort, Kalin said.
“Andrew Lorenz had a real good day in the discus, having a personal best throw. Alec Fuelberth performed well in the long jump. This was his first time jumping this year and had a personal best jump. He also had a career best in the 300 hurdles.”
Kalin said the team has developed some very good depth this season. That depth should lead to some very good things for the team, he said.
“We have really improved our depth and have a chance to finish up our last three meets with some good performances,” Kalin said. “We should have a shot at the Conference Meet at Winnebago and at the District Meet down the road. We need to get contributions from the whole team and stay healthy.”
Osmond took top honors in the girls’ division with 122 points. Hartington finished the meet as the runner-up.
Becca Heikes won two events for Hartington — the 100-meter hurdles (17.42) and pole vault (8-0). Michaela Dendinger also earned a gold medal for her efforts in the shot put.
Coach Laura Noecker said despite the poor weather, the team performed well.
“Finally the weather held off in order for our kids to run a meet.  Despite a bit of drizzle in the second to the last event we survived this meet with a runner up finish behind a very deep Osmond girls team,” Coach Noecker said. “We had some very nice marks posted by our girl throwers — Michaela Dendinger and Sara Pinkelman.  These young throwers seem to improve everyday.”
