HARTINGTON — Cedar Catholic opened the 2011 golf season with a win here last week.
Cedar fired a 158 to easily out-distance second-place Stanton and Norfolk Catholic to win Thursday’s opening-season triangular at the Hartington Golf Course.
The Cedar JV team also earned the team title. Had the local JV team been able to play in the varsity meet, they would have finished right behind Cedar’s A team, carding a 167 on the day.
Eric Kruse came through big for the Trojans in his first-ever varsity action. Kruse carded a 36 to earn medalist honors in the varsity meet. Kyle Klug and Seth Howell tied for third place in the event. Tyler Leise fired a 43 and sophomore Dalton Lammers played in the fifth spot in the triangular.
Coach Mike Johnson was pleased with his team’s first outing.
“The kids did a very good job at the triangular on Thursday. I was real happy with how well we shot at the first meet of the season,” he said. “Eric Kruse had a tremendous day in his first varsity golf meet. Kyle and Seth did a good job of scrambling for pars, and Tyler Leise also had a good day.”
The Junior Varsity players also performed very well, Johnson said.
“In the JV division we also had kids play some really good golf. Derek Klug shot his lowest round in competition, and both Grant Howell, and Josh Anderson played very solid golf,“ Coach Johnson said. “I believe we have quite a bit of depth on this team as we have three or four kids that will be fighting all year long for that fifth spot on varsity.”
Cedar was in action at the Hartington Golf Course again on Monday and the team will compete Thursday in Laurel.
