MADISON — The final inning of Saturday’s District 18-and-under girls softball game looked hauntingly familiar for the Hartington Black Bettys.

The Hartington team built a comfortable early lead against the O’Neill Mean Green, only to see that big margin erased with a late rally.

The Hartington defense and pitcher Tracy Peitz shut down O’Neill to earn the 6-5 win and advance into Sunday’s elimination round.

MADISON — The Hartington Black Bettys suffered a 5-4 setback to Verdigre in first-round action at Saturday’s  Class C District softball tournament.

Tracy Peitz pitched a flawless game for the first five and two-thirds innings of Saturday’s 8 a.m. contest.

Peitz did not allow a hit and only allowed two base runners until late in the sixth inning.

She was tagged for a hit to left field and a center field inside-the-park home run in the sixth frame before striking out the next batter to shut down the threat.

HOUSTON, Texas — Adelyne Catherine (Lammers) Hansen, 95, died April 14, 2010, at her daughter’s home in Houston, Texas.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated April 19 at Assumption Catholic Church, Houston, with burial at Houston National Cemetery, Houston, Texas.

Adelyne was born Sept. 1, 1914, to Joseph H. and Catherine (Willembring) Lammers.

She is survived by five daughters, Joan Bauer, Dean Tschtschula, Karen Howard and Patti Armond, all of Houston, Texas; and Carol Loop, Detroit, Mich.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

HARTINGTON — Lorraine L. Bauman, 88, Hartington, died June 16, 2010, at the Golden Living Center, Hartington.

Visitation and a Vigil Service were June 18 at the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington, and one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.

Mass of Christian Burial was June 19 at the Holy Family (Sts. Peter and Paul) Catholic Church, Bow Valley, with the Rev. Eric Olsen officiating.

Visitation and a Vigil Service were June 20 at Holy Family (Sacred Heart) Catholic Church, Wynot, and continued one hour prior to services.

Mass of Christian Burial was June 21 at Holy Family (Sacred Heart) Catholic Church, Wynot, with Rev. Tim Lange and Rev. David Fulton officiating.

BELDEN — Orpha Nellie Sutton Eby, 97, Belden died at Independence House, Lincoln, June 21, 2010.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m., June 25, at Johnson Funeral Home, Randolph.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m., June 26, at Union Presbyterian Church, Belden, with Rev. Rachelle McCalla officiating.

LAUREL — Elsie M. Johnson, 80, Laurel, died June 14, 2010, at Faith Regional Health Services, Norfolk.

Visitation was June 16, 5-8 p.m., at the Hasemann Funeral Home, Laurel.

Funeral services were June 17 at the Laurel City Auditorium, with Stanley Morrison and Jana Jelinek officiating.

Interment was in the Laurel Cemetery, Laurel.

HARTINGTON — The land transfer between Hartington Public and Holy Trinity Schools which will allow the street between the two schools to continue on south and exit onto 882 Road will finally become a reality.

“We have all of the details worked out with Holy Trinity so we can go ahead with the legal documents,” Board member Colin Kathol told Hartington School Board members on Monday night.

HARTINGTON — Five local high school students recently returned home from the trip of a lifetime.

The group packed their bags and left the country, headed for Spain from May 28-June 5.

Along the way, they experienced a different culture, aged architecture, and engrossing cuisine.

HARTINGTON — The Hartington School Board accepted the resignation Monday of board member Wendy Sudbeck.

She has served on the board for close to four years. Sudbeck was appointed to finish out a term when a vacancy occurred and then was re-elected to a four-year term.

Sudbeck said it had been an honor to serve with the other members on the school board.

HARTINGTON — Hartington’s new police officer is well qualified for the job.

Mark Simpson arrived in Hartington from Utah with 14 years experience in law enforcement.

Simpson is certified as a police officer, emergency medical technician, and fire fighter as well as holding certifications for HazMat Operations and Incident Command Operations.
