HARTINGTON — So long smoke, hello clean air.
A statewide smoking ban takes effect June 1.

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services and local health departments will be working with businesses to help them comply with Nebraska’s new smoke-free law.
Every indoor workplace and public place in Cedar County as well as across the state must be smoke-free by June 1. The act was designed to protect the public health and welfare of people.
Lonnie Sackschewsky, who owns Lonnie’s Bar and Grill in Coleridge and Donavon Kleinschmit, who owns Delmonicos #20 Saloon & Steak House in Fordyce, do not like the new law.
“I don’t think the ban is fair,” said Sackschewsky.
People can currently smoke at most food establishments in the county, but June 1 that will change.

OMAHA — The Hartington 4×100 meter relay team had to earn a wildcard slot to advance to State last week.
The Wildcat team proved it belonged in the Big Show as they beat the two teams that finished ahead of them at Districts, as well as the rest of the competition at the State meet to earn the gold medal in the speed relay.
Hartington Coach Blair Kalin said the team worked very hard to prepare for the race.
“Getting third in the District was kind of an eye-opener,” he said. “We worked on our hand-offs all week prior to going. We got on the track Saturday morning to work on the hand-offs, too.”
Kalin said Assistant Coach Jerry Bult has done a good job of working with the relay team.
“He works with them all the time. Their hand-offs all season long and at the state meet have been awfully good and that’s a big factor in winning relay races,” Kalin said.
The veteran HPS Coach was pleased with the squad’s effort in Omaha and all season long.
“They’ve had quite a season. They’ve been pretty consistent outside of Districts. They deserve to be State champs. They worked awfully hard for this. Winning, and winning out of lane eight besides is quite an accomplishment.”
Zach Bakke had a big day for the Wildcats, too. Besides his role in earning the gold medal in the relay, he also picked up medals in the 100 and 200-yard dashes.
Bakke ended his high school career with a real bang, Kalin said.
”He’s had a career he can be proud of. He’s been at the State Meet all four years,” Kalin said. “He ran with a lot of confidence down there this year.”
Bakke also earned a medal as a freshman on the 4×100 team that got third at state.
“To finish with two individual medals at the state meet, that’s tough to do. That’s quite an accomplishment for him. I was happy he could cap his career off with a good finish at the state meet,” Kalin said.
OMAHA — Wynot High School junior Ryan Boeckman won the state discus title during the State Track Meet here last week. Boeckman threw the discus 151-feet, 10 inches to earn the gold medal.
