Cedar boys drop pair of games

HARTINGTON — Cedar Catholic’s boys basketball team dropped a pair of 11-point losses last week.
The Trojans fell to Battle Creek, 47-36, in a Parent’s Night contest here Feb. 7. Cedar hit the road Thursday, falling to Lutheran High Northeast, 62-51.
Cedar will close out the regular season Friday at home against Norfolk Catholic.

The Trojans open SubDistrict play next Monday in Wayne. Official pairings had not been released by press times, but if the C2-7 SubDistrict were played today, Cedar would be the fifth seed and would play Emerson-Hubbard in Monday’s tourney opener at Wayne.Ponca and Laurel-Concord are the top two seeds in C2-7.
Defense dominated Tuesday in Cedar’s game against Battle Creek.
Battle Creek took a hard-fought 6-4 lead to close out the first quarter. The Braves outscored Cedar 9-10 in the next frame to take a narrow 16-13 lead into the locker room at break.
The two teams were again evenly matched in the third quarter as they both hit for 11 points.
Freethrows allowed the Braves to outscore Cedar 20-12 in the final frame and earn the 47-36 win.
“We just had trouble scoring,” Coach Matt Steffen said. “They had their two 6’7” guys in the lane and we had trouble knocking down shots from the perimeter.”
Cedar’s offense was led on the night by Kyle Kramer and Tim Wieseler, who hit for nine and eight points, respectively.

Cedar ran into an offensive dynamo at Norfolk in the form of Porter Birtell. Birtell finished the night with a game-high 24 points to lead the Eagles.
The Eagles raced out to a 19-9 first-quarter lead in the contest.
Cedar got its offense moving in the second frame and was able to put up 15 points, but the Norfolk team poured in 17 of their own to take a comfortable 36-24 lead into the locker room.
“As Coach Johnson told the kids after the game, the second quarter was one of the best quarters of basketball we have played this year as far as executing the offense and having no turnovers,” Coach Steffen said.
Lutheran Northeast outscored Cedar 36-27 over the final 16 minutes to seal the win.
“In the third quarter, Lutheran extended their zone a little and got more aggressive and we had some turnovers and they extended their lead to six to eight and we couldn’t recover.”
Cedar’s offense was led on the night by  Tim Wieseler, who hit for 16 points in the contest. Kyle Kramer also hit for double figures with 12.
