WYNOT — The Wynot Blue Devils dug themselves a huge hole in the first half Friday and never were able to recover as the top-rated Elgin Eagles rolled over the home team 50-12.

HARTINGTON —  A disturbing trend is continuing as area schools got underway last week for a new year.
Most of the schools in Cedar County have seen a drop in enrollment from the previous school year.
Wynot is the only school that has seen an increase in K-12 students – going from 144 students last year to 146 students this school year.
Coleridge Community School has seen a slight increase in enrollment in middle school although there are 17 less students in the total K-12 school enrollment from last year.

Family Members Celebrate One of County’s Oldest Homsteads

HARTINGTON — Monte and Diane Morten opened their home to 158 relatives for a Morten 150th anniversary this month.
Relatives traveled from across the U.S. as well as from Scotland and England to gather at the family farm, which is the site of the original homestead site.
The descendants of Henry Morten were honoring his pioneering efforts when he came to America from England over 150 years ago.
They also had a chance to visit and share stories with relatives – some of whom they had never met before.
Dave and Rachel Martin came over from Scotland – Dave wore a kilt to the reunion.

HARTINGTON — The Hartington City Council continued to look for cuts as they tried Monday to prepare the new fiscal budget.
Council members looked at budget figures for streets, water, a new police car, equipment for the Fire Department, improvements at the park and funds for economic development before shaving off $83,000 from the proposed figures that were reviewed at the last budget workshop.

WYNOT — The Wynot Blue Devil football team will open the new season Friday against one of the best eight-man teams in the state in 2007 state runner-up Elgin.
The Blue Devils are led this year by first-year head coach Steve Wieseler, who took over for long-time coach Ron Rolfes.
