HARTINGTON — Several area boys will be learning this summer how city, county and state governments work.

Ryan Heimes of Wynot, Adam Burbach of Cedar Catholic, and Blake Gothier of Hartington will be joining nearly 380 other high school juniors from across Nebraska when they attend the American Legion Cornhusker Boys’ State on June 1-7 at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.
Gothier, who is the son of Dan and Marcella Gothier, is a junior at Hartington Public School.

HARTINGTON — A Federal Assistance to Firefighters grant of nearly $260,000 will help fire fighters and Emergency Medical Services provide better service to Cedar County residents.
Fire and EMS agencies that belong to the Big Nine Mutual Aid Organization have already received new and much needed equipment thanks to the grant funds, according to Cedar County Emergency Management Director Kevin Garvin.

City Attorney Vanessa Gorden will check on the legalities and procedures for charging the cost of paving to land owners.

Several students worked to put on a special variety show for the elementary students Friday morning. They put on the same show for high school and junior high school students Friday afternoon.

The public is invited to view the show during a 7 p.m. performance at the school Friday night.

HARTINGTON — April 25 is usually a bright, sunny spring day….but not this year.

Mid morning snow flurries reduced visibility and made traveling hazardous Friday.

By noon Friday an inch of snow had fallen just west of Hartington, with about half an inch accumulating in town.

LINCOLN – Cedar County News Co-Publisher Peggy Year was honored at a Friday banquet here for her role in community leadership.
She was presented with a marble Harpst Leadership Nebraska plaque naming her as the, ”Nebraska Newspaper Publisher of the Year.”
The award is richly deserved said Nebraska Press Association Executive Director Allen Beerman.

“When Don Harpst Jr. established The Leadership Nebraska Award in honor of his father, he must have had in mind persons precisely like this year’s recipient,” Beerman said. “Here is a woman who generously used her publishing base for community leadership.”
Year has been involved in community organizations and events ever since moving to Hartington 16 years ago.

LINCOLN — Cedar County correctly valued Cedar County farm land near Laurel, the Nebraska Court of Appeals recently ruled.
The Court’s decision approves the Tax Equalization and Review Commission (TERC) decision affirming the Cedar County Board of Equalization decision, which denied several Cedar County property valuation requests.
The protests were filed because the southern Cedar County land owners felt the market value system of valuing their land was unfair.

The event gave instructors JoAnne Hamilton and Pat Sedivy a chance to show off the talent of the students who recently earned District Superior ratings.

HARTINGTON — Hartington speedster Zach Bakke paced the Wildcats with three gold medals here last week.
Bakke cruised to wins in the 100- and 200-meter dashes and claimed top honors in the long jump, as well.
His efforts were not enough to garner a team title, though, as the Wildcats finished third in the meet.
Neligh-Oakdale defeated Bloomfield omfield 81-77 for the team title with Hartingtontington just one point back in third.

HARTINGTON — The Cedar Catholic golf team has been very busy lately.
The local boys’ golf team has spent a lot of time on the course recently making up a late start to the season due to poor weather.
After the last eight days the varsity has now played in five meets, the junior varsity in four meets, and still only had seven practices on the season because of weather.
“It’s been a very busy eight days for the golf team. The varsity played in three invitationals and one triangular. The junior varsity played in the Osmond Invitational, as well as the conference meet and also competed in one triangular. I’m very proud of how the kids have competed during this stretch of meet,” said Cedar Catholic coach Mike Johnson.
