FREEMAN, S.D. — The Wynot Expos will get another chance to go after the South Dakota Amateur Baseball state title.
Wynot advanced to the District 6B title game Sunday. No matter what happens in that contest Wynot now has a date for next week’s State Tournament. Crofton also advanced to the title contest.
The two Nebraska teams will face off Saturday, Aug. 4 at 7 p.m. for the South Dakota 6B championship.
Wynot advanced to the title game by defeating Irene 11-1. Wynot’s Scott Morrison earned the 11-1 win when he threw a three-hitter at Irene.
Lee Heimes once again provided the power for the Expos with a home run. Ken Spader also homered for Wynot. Matt Hames added two hits.
Simon Healy’s solo home run in the fourth gave Irene its lone run of the contest.
Crofton scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to rally past Menno 6-5.
Bill Guenther tied the game in the ninth with a pinch-hit two-run homer. Brian Guenther’s single later in the frame plated the game-winner.
On Thursday Wynot pounded Lesterville 13-3 to advance to the semifinals.
Wynot got off to a quick 3-0 start against the Broncs. The Expos didn’t let up as they cruised to the 10-run win.
Scott and Lee Heimes paced the offense with homers. Scott Heimes also had a double in the contest.
Steve Wieseler picked up the win. Aaron Goeken took the loss.
Wynot had been rated in the Top 10 in South Dakota Class Be most of the year, but late-season losses knocked them out of the state rankings. The Expos did receive an honorable mention nod in the latest poll, however.
The S.D. state amateur baseball tournament will be held Aug. 8-19 at the Birdcage in Sioux Falls
