Chad Koch makes his way through a huge hole late in Wednesday’s playoff game at Russ Hochstein Field.

HARTINGTON — The Cedar Catholic Trojans defeated Stanton 14-7 in second-round playoff action here Wednesday.

Cedar will now traweb-congrats.jpgvel to Fremont to take on Archbishop Bergan in quarterfinal round action Monday.

Defense was the name of the game once again as both teams battled to a scoreless tie in the first half.

Stanton got on the board on its second play from scrimmage in the second half on a 68 yard TD run.

The Trojans did not let the big play get them down, though. The Cedar offense took the ball on the next series and drove deep into Stanton territory to score.

Cedar’s fierce line play began to wear the Mustangs down in the final half and Chad Koch took advantage of that to race to a 58-yard TD run with just over eight minutes left in the game to give the Trojans the lead.

HARTINGTON — 29-6
That was the final score the last time Cedar Catholic and Stanton got together on the football field.web-kyle-talks-to-johnson-wpcc-playoff-game.jpg
It was October, 2005 and Stanton came into Russ Hochstein Field with an undefeated record and as the number-one rated team in Class C2.
Cedar Catholic wasn’t intimidated, though.
The Trojans did not allow the Mustangs to run over them as the rest of the competition had that year and Cedar pulled the suprise.
Coach Greg Hanson and his Mustangs have not forgotten the 2005 game.
The Trojans, 8-1, enter post-season as the fourth seed in the eastern bracket. The Blue Jays, 5-3, are the 13th seed.
Despite their record, the Jays are a very good team. They play in the toughest C2 District in the state. Howells won their District this year, while Stanton took second.

HARTINGTON — There are mixed reactions about Cedar County’s decision last week to go ahead with a $2.2 million courthouse addition without a vote of the people.

web-courthouse-blueprint.jpgSeveral people from across Cedar County think the action taken at last week’s Cedar County Commission meeting should have been decided by an election.
Some said they think it was a good idea to do the renovation and addition on the Courthouse, but it still should have been brought before the people.
After months of discussion and debate and several public meetings with little attendance, Commissioners Frederick Pinkelman and Dave McGregor said last week they did not feel the public had enough information to make a good decision concerning the issue.
Pinkelman said he had visited with people concerning the project.
