1964: Dogs dead from poisoning

75 Years Ago - May 5, 1949 RANDOLPH – A bridge on a county road three miles south of Randolph was destroyed by fire Wednesday morning. The ten-foot bridge was engulfed in flames and beyond saving by the time the Randolph Volunteer Fire Department arrived. Of crested planks, the bridge burned rapidly, with the flames fanned by the strong wind.

It is believed that the fire started from burning thistles in a nearby field.

60 Years Ago - April 30, 1964 RANDOLPH – Several Randolph families have a nomination for the “meanest person in the world.” They are families who have lost their pets through death by poison, which was evidently spread by some individual in Randolph.

An unofficial count indicates that at least eight dogs have been killed by poisoning in an area in east Randolph. At least three other dogs have been stricken, but recovered.

In one case the dog recovered after being treated by a local veterinarian. The veterinarian stated that the dog was unquestionably poisoned by strychnine.

50 Years Ago - May 2, 1974 RANDOLPH – The Randolph Public School Banquet and Prom will be held on Saturday evening with the banquet to be held at the East School. The dance will be held at the West School Gym.

Queen candidates for the 1974 prom are Gale Kruger, Holly Olberding, Cindy Van Auker and Krista Young. Jim Backhaus, Jim Billerbeck, Kim Kuhl and Don Rossbach are the king candidates.

40 Years Ago - May 3, 1984 RANDOLPH – It was smiles all the way around for the four Randolph High School students who received superior rankings for their solo performances in individual events at district music contest held over the weekend. Eight other invididuals received excellent rankings for their performances.

Superior ranked perfomers include Shelly Wattier, clarinet; David Carstens, percussion; Julie Carstens, flue; and Kelly Theiman, snare drums.

Receiving excellent for their performances included Eric Pentico, saxophone; Dawn Gerkins, Connie Nordhues and Lisa Thies, clarinet trio; Debbie Milander and Janeen Kittle, tuba duet; piano solos by Becky Lackas and Christi Carpenter and the band for their group performance.

Jay Marcum is the instrumental muic instructor at Randolph High School. *** RANDOLPH – A total of 262 children were fingerprinted for their parents’ own records on Saturday during the Randolph Woman’s Club sponsored clinic.

The local Woman’s Club with the cooperation of the Cedar County Sheriff’s Department, the Randolph Police Department and the Randolph Public School and volunteers from the Lions Club, Community Club, TAO Extension Club, Randolph Education Association, PEO and Modern Mrs. Club handled the duties required.

The fingerprint clinic provided a print of each finger and each hand for parents or guardian to keep to provide identification if their child is lost, kidnapped or disappears. Children from Randolph, Carroll, Norfolk, Belden, Atkinson, Mc-Lean, Foster, Coleridge and out of state children from Wisconsin and Arkansas were among those fingerprinted.

30 Years Ago - May 4, 1994 RANDOLPH – Prom candidates include Regina Reineke, Dawn Moser, Heather Walz, Jill Sporleder, Chris Korth, Gabe Hansen, Brian Reineke and Monte Lewis. Coronation is Saturday, May 7, 11 p.m., west school gym. *** RANDOLPH – RHS junior Matt Morten was named as winner of the High School Student Composition Contest sponsored by the University of Nebraska at Omaha Department of Music/College of Fine Arts, Tuesday, April 12.

Along with a certificate for the honor, Morten was awarded a cash prize for his original piano composition.

High school music students from across the state were encouraged to submit one or more compositions for review in order to be considered for a masterclass in composition. Morten was one of six selected.

20 Years Ago - May 5, 2004 RANDOLPH – Randolph High School held prom on Saturday, May 1. Crowned king was Bryan Alderson, son of Rick and Vickie Alderson. Reigning queen is Erin Bazata, daughter of Dennis and Gail Bazata. *** RANDOLPH – Randolph’s Junior Engineering Technology Society (JETS) placed ninth nationally in the Division I Varsity Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science (TEAMS) competition. Division I is for schools with a senior class enrollment of up to 40 students.

Randolph’s JETS team consists of Karissa Dominisse, Sheila Korth, Tiffany Kruse, Greg Tunink, Ti Kauth, Brandon Massey, James Svitak and Wyatt Robinson.

Randolph was able to represent Nebraska at the National Competition by scoring one of the highest scores in the state in March at the TEAMS competition in Lincoln. Randolph scored a 49 in Divisiosn I competition in Lincoln to qualify them for the National competition.

10 Years Ago - April 30, 2014 RANDOLPH – Investigation continues by the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department and the Nebraska State Patrol in a one-vehicle accident that occurred on Monday, April 28, 2014, at approximately 7 a.m. Three persons died in the accident which took place two miles south of the 8120 junction (south of Jerry’s Hilltop Care) on Highway 81.

According to County Attorney Verlyn Luebbe and County Sheriff Rick Eberhardt, the accident occurred when a 2003 Ford Excursion, traveling northbound on Highway 81, left the roadway when a tire blew out and went into the ditch. The vehicle rolled several times. Nine male occupants were ejected from the vehicle, resulting in the death of three of them, the report said.

Survivors were transported to Faith Regional Health Services by the Randolph and Osmond rescue squads. They were assisted by members of the Randolph and Osmond fire departments. *** RANDOLPH – Randolph FFA members and Brent Billerbeck, a firefighter in Randolph with Billerbeck Construction, helped clean up the Veterans Memorial next to the Times office so plants and flowers can be planted soon. They worked as volunteers from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Monday, April 28, and happened to hit the rainiest time during the day.
